The AMA has announced that they will be changing the Evaluation & Management Guidelines that have been in place all the way back to 1995. Their intent is to dramatically reduce the documentation burden of the history and physical exam, while placing all emphasis on Medical Decision Making to determine the correct E&M visit code. This will affect ALL payers, not just Medicare. They are also changing the requirements for time based visits, as well as prolonged services. These changes will take affect starting January 1, 2021.
