Congress has extended last year’s Medicare rules for telehealth until January 30, 2026. This means that providers can continue to provide telehealth services when the patient is in their home. Audio-Visual and Audio-Only services can be billed. Codes used are as follows:
Audio-Visual: 99202-99215
- Visits can be based on Medical Decision Making (MDM) or total time spent by provider. Refer to the E&M Documentation Guidelines for details.
- When billing these services, use the appropriate E&M code followed by the -95 modifier. Last year’s documentation requirements remain.
Audio-Only: 99202-99215
- Phone-only codes (99441-99443) were eliminated last year. CMS instructs practices to use the same codes Audio-Visual visits (99202-99215).
- When billing these services, use the appropriate E&M code followed by the -93 modifier. Last year’s documentation requirements remain. An Audio-only service cannot be billed within 7 days of a previous E&M service, or result in an E&M service within the next 48 hours.
If congress fails to extend these services by January 30, 2026, the overwhelming majority of telehealth services will no longer be covered. For more information from HHS, click on the following link: https://telehealth.hhs.gov/providers/telehealth-policy/telehealth-policy-updates
